Which Hotel Room Type Should I Choose?

As families come in all shapes and sizes, giving your family the space it needs on holiday is as important to the success of your time away as finding a hotel with the right facilities. So here’s a handy guide to hotel room types, to make sure you and your little (and not so little) ones can have the happiest of holidays.

Rooms with an extra bed

If you are travelling with a young child or infant (up to 2 years of age) then a standard or superior double or twin room might be all that you need. Just check with your tour operator or travel agent to see if there is sufficient space for a cot or perhaps an extra bed, bearing in mind this might be a sofa or foldaway bed.

Suites

Suites or junior suites tend to be more spacious, although again you may find that the extra bed is a sofa bed. Some hotels also have the option of a one bedroom suite, with twin or double bed in the bedroom and a separate lounge with one or even two sofa beds.

Two bedroom suites will be more suitable for a larger family as will family suites. These may be larger still and more accommodating for adults and children with extra beds, bunk beds or cot space.

Interconnecting rooms

Many hotels are also able to give their guests the option of interconnecting rooms - two separate rooms connected via a private door. These rooms are ideal for families with young children who are happy to sleep in a room on their own with the reassurance of having their parents close by. Interconnecting rooms have the added bonus of two bathrooms.

Villas and Apartments

Villas and apartments tend to offer even more space with separate rooms, lounges, kitchen space, and sometimes private pools.

Price Reductions

Family-friendly hotels may offer reductions for the first child (aged 2 – 11 years) sharing with two adults, reductions for a second child, or a child sharing with only one adult. Special reductions for children in separate or interconnecting rooms, and special half board discounts are also common. Children over the age of 12 are generally counted as adults; if your children are older you will need to look for rooms that sleep multiple adults. Age limits do vary between hotels, so check with your tour operator or travel agent.

Room Occupancies

On our website you’ll find the number of occupants listed under our ‘Room Types’ heading on the hotel pages as follows: Two bedroom family suite (min 2+2, max 4+1), the maximum number of adults is always listed first followed by the maximum number of children. So here the minimum number of occupants is two adults and two children and the maximum, four adults and one child. Any in-room facilities are listed under the ‘Features’ heading.

Those with infants will stay comfortably in a superior twin/double with cot space available; cots are free of charge and available upon request. Junior suites offer a sofa bed for an extra child and Suites have room for a sofa bed and a cot. Bigger families may wish to stay in a Two bedroom family suite or Royal Kiko Suite which sleeps a minimum of 2 adults and 2 children and a maximum of 3 adults and 2 children.
