COMO Maalifushi, Maldives

Alone in the remote Thaa Atoll, a 60-minute seaplane flight from Male, tranquil COMO Maalifushi is surrounded by the vibrant coral of a simply stunning house reef. Excellent dive sites are a given and the area is popular for whale shark discovery.

Clean lines, thatched roofs and bleached woods are the hallmarks of the tropically minimalist beach-based and overwater villas. The design is sophisticated but seductively low-key and attracts a regular high-profile clientele from the worlds of music, fashion and film. Service is exemplary.

The food here is superb and features Asian, Mediterranean and Japanese cuisine. Overwater restaurant Tai is also notable for its sensational sunset views and visits from established marine life.

The Como Shambala Spa is a particular highlight. Try low-impact exercise, meditation and Thai massage, or cycle there first thing in the morning to join the resident yoga guru for sunrise salutations. Kayaking, windsurfing and paddle boarding seem almost tame compared to night swimming with whale sharks.
