Constance Halaveli, Maldives

This classic barefoot resort is located on an island of coconut palms dissected by sandy lanes, and with one long overwater jetty. The design of Constance Halaveli echoes the building traditions of the region with thatched roofs, polished wood and a nod to the curved Dhoni boats.

Overwater villas offer plenty of space, private plunge pool and deck. Beach villas are more private and very suitable for families; some master bedrooms adjoin bunk rooms. For families with older children double-storey villas offer a second-level bedroom with separate outdoor access. All villas come with iMac, well-stocked minibar, wine cooler and plunge pool.

There is fine Asian dining at Jing on the overwater jetty; the neighbouring bar is the best place for cocktails. Back on land is a buffet-style restaurant, sushi bar and poolside grill. The kids' club has unusually long hours and many activities. There is a dive centre, snorkelling and kayaks, infinity pool, spa, gym and tennis court.
