Makunudu Island, Maldives
Maldives
Tucked away in the North Male Atoll, a 50-minute speedboat journey away from Male, Makunudu Island is a true Maldivian retreat and a rare find. This gem of a resort offers the authentic Maldives as it used to be and is ideal for a peaceful, intimate getaway or a honeymoon.
There are a mere 36 charming beachfront bungalows nestling amidst the tropical foliage. Built in traditional Maldivian style using local stone and wood they blend rustic charm with modern comforts.
Full board is included with breakfast, lunch and dinner served at the Ara Iru Restaurant. Alternatively the a la carte restaurant Iru Fohey tempts with delicious seafood dishes and stunning sunsets, and the bar is a great spot for cocktails, and live music on some nights.
Take to the water on a catamaran or windsurfer, paddle a kayay or try a stand up paddle board, snorkel around the island, or go diving. On dry land play a game of tennis or badminton. Find a peaceful spot on the impossibly white sandy beach and bask in the sun or indulge in a pampering spa treatment, and at night, gaze at the starry sky.
Quiet, friendly and laid-back this is a delightful island resort with simple charms and traditional values and perfect for those looking to get away from it all.

The house reef is excellent for snorkelling and an easy, leisurely snorkel around the island takes about 45 minutes. There are a number of spectacular dive sites nearby and the on-site 5 star rated PADI dive centre offers a range of scuba diving courses, and one complimentary introductory dive. The best time to see Manta rays is from November to April and the optimum viewing time for whale sharks is January to March.
There are opportunities for windsurfing and waterskiing, use of kayaks and stand up paddle boards, and night fishing on a traditional dhoni with local fishermen. On dry land there is tennis, badminton and volleyball, and a range of excursions can be arranged through the resort including island hopping, local island discovery and a Male city tour. Those romantically inclined can enjoy a private champagne lunch on a secluded sandbank, a sunset cruise or a candlelit dinner under the stars on the beach.
